Is Sifnos safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Sifnos is a very safe island with very little crime. The realistic risks are natural: heat and little shade on footpaths, diving from rocks at the Seven Martyrs, strong meltemi winds in summer and narrow roads. Theft is not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Rock diving
People dive from the ledges at the Epta Martyres chapel; check depth and conditions, and do not dive in rough sea.
Hiking in heat
Shade is scarce on the trails; start by 8:00 in summer and carry water.
Meltemi wind
In July and August strong north winds can delay smaller ferries and roughen exposed beaches.
Roads
Island roads are narrow; ride scooters slowly and wear a helmet.
Steps
Kastro's lanes and the steps to the Seven Martyrs are steep; wear proper shoes.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on Kastro's cliff edges and on footpaths after dark.
Getting around safely
Taxis are few and need booking. Buses link Kamares, Apollonia, Kastro, Platys Gialos, Faros, Vathy and Cheronissos in summer, every 30–60 minutes on main routes. Rent cars ahead in July and August.
Solo and women travellers
Sifnos is very comfortable for women travelling alone, including on the trails. Normal precautions apply in bars; tell someone your route before a long walk.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is not generally recommended for drinking; buy bottled or ask your host. The summer sun is strong. Medical care on the island is basic; serious cases go to Athens, so travel insurance is important.
