Is Sibiu safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Sibiu is a safe, calm city, and most visitors have no problems at all. The realistic risks are uneven cobbles and steep stairs, mountain driving on the Transfăgărășan, and occasional unlicensed taxis or overcharging. Violent crime against tourists is rare.

The real risks

Mountain roads

The Transfăgărășan has many hairpins, heavy traffic in summer and fast-changing weather. Leave early, drive slowly and check the road status before you go.

Taxis

Use taxi apps or ask your hotel to call a taxi, rather than accepting rides from drivers who approach you.

Cobbles and stairs

The old town has steep stairways between the upper and lower town and uneven cobbles. Wear comfortable shoes, especially in ice or rain.

Stray dogs and bears in the mountains

In rural and mountain areas, keep a distance from dogs guarding flocks. Bears live in the Carpathians; never feed them, and follow local warnings, especially on the Transfăgărășan.

Winter cold

Winters are often below freezing. Dress warmly and take care on icy pavements.

Areas and times to take care

The upper town, the lower town and the streets around the walls are fine to walk in the evening, and the main squares are busy and well lit. There are no areas in the centre that visitors need to avoid. Take normal care around the train and bus stations late at night.

Getting around safely

Tursib buses are safe and cheap. Use taxi apps or official taxis with visible prices. If you rent a car, roads to the villages are generally good, but mountain roads need care, and the Transfăgărășan opens only in summer, roughly July to October depending on snow.

Solo and women travellers

Sibiu is generally comfortable for solo women, and the old town is lively and safe in the evening. Eating alone in cafés and restaurants is normal. Take a taxi from the app rather than walking far outside the centre at night, and join a group or tour for remote mountain hikes.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is generally considered safe in the city, though many people drink bottled water. Bring warm clothes for the mountains even in summer, as Bâlea Lake at about 2,000 metres is much colder than town. Travel insurance is recommended; EU visitors should carry an EHIC or GHIC card.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency).
