Is Savannah safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Savannah's Historic District is generally safe and busy with visitors, and most trips are trouble-free. The realistic risks are car break-ins, occasional street crime at night away from the busy areas, and summer heat and storms. Like many US cities, Savannah has higher crime in some neighbourhoods, but these are rarely on visitors' routes.
The real risks
Car break-ins
Thefts from parked cars happen downtown and at beach and trail parking. Never leave bags or valuables visible.
Walking at night
The squares, River Street and City Market are busy in the evening. Late at night, stick to lit, busy streets or take a rideshare, and avoid empty lanes and parks.
Heat and storms
June to August average highs of about 30–32°C with high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Hurricane season runs from June to November.
Uneven pavements
Brick sidewalks, tree roots and the steep stone steps down to River Street are easy to trip on, especially at night.
Bugs
Biting midges (no-see-ums) and mosquitoes are common near water at dusk. Use repellent.
Areas and times to take care
The Historic District, River Street, City Market, Forsyth Park and Starland are popular with visitors. Take ordinary care after dark on quieter streets on the edges of downtown, and in Forsyth Park late at night. Ask your hotel if you are unsure about a particular area.
Getting around safely
Rideshare apps and taxis are easy to use and reasonably priced. The free DOT shuttle and ferry are safe. If you drive, use garages for overnight parking and do not leave valuables in the car.
Solo and women travellers
Savannah is generally comfortable for solo women, and eating alone at a bar is normal. Use usual precautions at night, keep an eye on your drink on busy River Street evenings and take a rideshare rather than walking alone through empty streets late at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Protect yourself from heat, humidity and sun in summer, and from midges and mosquitoes near water. Medical care is excellent but very expensive without insurance, so make sure your travel insurance covers the US.
