Is Sapporo safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Sapporo is very safe, with low crime and orderly streets day and night. The real risks are winter conditions: icy pavements, heavy snow and cold. Susukino's nightlife has the usual minor issues such as overcharging in some bars.
The real risks
Icy pavements
From December to March, pavements are icy; wear boots with grip or buy clip-on spikes for a few hundred yen.
Cold
Winter highs are around -3 to 1°C and lows near -10°C; dress in layers, with hat and gloves.
Bar touts in Susukino
Touts may lead you to bars with hidden charges. Choose places yourself and check prices.
Snow from roofs
Snow and icicles can fall from roofs during thaws; walk away from building edges.
Earthquakes
Hokkaido has earthquakes, like the rest of Japan; follow hotel instructions.
Areas and times to take care
All central areas, including Susukino at night, are safe. In Susukino, ignore street touts and avoid bars without listed prices. In winter, take care on slopes and crossings, which are often icy.
Getting around safely
The subway, tram and JR trains are safe and punctual. Taxis start at about ¥670 and are useful on snowy nights. Driving in winter requires experience on snow and ice.
Solo and women travellers
Sapporo is an excellent destination for women travelling alone: very safe and easy to navigate. Use normal caution in Susukino late at night, and avoid accepting invitations from touts.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe to drink. Winter cold and ice are the main health risks; frostbite and falls are more common than crime. Summer is mild (around 26°C), with no rainy season like Honshu.
