Is Sapporo expensive? What things really cost in 2026

Sapporo is affordable for Japan, cheaper than Tokyo or Kyoto for hotels, and food is a highlight at fair prices. A mid-range day is about ¥22,000 per person, with the room taking almost half. Prices spike during the Snow Festival in early February, when hotels fill months ahead.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest share, though business hotels in Susukino are cheap; Jozankei onsen ryokan with dinner cost ¥35,000-80,000. Food is the next share and the best reason to spend: seafood, ramen, soup curry and jingisukan. Transport is cheap with subway passes and short JR rides. Sapporo and Hokkaido have introduced accommodation taxes of a few hundred yen per person per night.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are cheapest in late autumn (November) and spring (April-May outside Golden Week). The Snow Festival in early February and the summer holidays in July-August are the most expensive; check current rates.
How to spend less
- Buy a 1-day subway pass (about ¥830) on days with several rides.
- Eat ramen and soup curry for cheap, filling meals.
- Visit the free Sapporo Beer Museum and pay only for the tasting.
- Go to Nijo Market early for kaisendon before tourist queues form.
- Book Snow Festival hotels months ahead or stay in Otaru or Chitose.
- Use underground walkways in winter instead of taxis between Odori and Susukino.
