Is Rovaniemi safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Rovaniemi is very safe, with low crime and reliable services. The real risks are the cold, ice and darkness in winter: frostbite, slipping on icy pavements and driving on snow in the dark. Crime against visitors is not a concern for most travellers.

The real risks

Extreme cold

Temperatures of -20°C or lower are normal in January and February. Dress in wool or synthetic layers, cover your face and hands, and avoid cotton, which gets wet and cold.

Ice

Pavements are often icy. Wear boots with good grip or slip-on ice cleats, and walk carefully on bridges and steps.

Winter driving

Rental cars have winter tyres, but snow, darkness and reindeer on the road make driving demanding. Drive slowly and only if you have winter experience.

Snowmobiles and frozen rivers

Follow your guide's route; never drive a snowmobile or walk on river ice on your own.

Darkness

In December the sun barely rises. Wear reflective items when walking by roads, as Finns do.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid. The town centre, the riverside, Arktikum and Santa Claus Village are safe day and night; the main precautions are about weather, not crime.

Getting around safely

Taxis are safe and metered; the airport to the centre costs roughly €25–35. Bus 8 links the centre, Santa Claus Village and the airport. Almost all safaris include hotel pick-up. The overnight Santa Claus Express sleeper train from Helsinki is a safe, comfortable option.

Solo and women travellers

Finland is one of the easiest countries for solo women. Harassment is uncommon and people are reserved but helpful. The usual precautions apply in bars at night, and in winter the main concern is not getting caught out by the cold or darkness on long walks alone; tell someone your plans if heading into the forest.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is excellent and safe to drink. Cold is the main health risk in winter: watch for numbness or white patches on skin (early frostbite), especially on snowmobiles. In summer, mosquitoes can be intense in June and July; bring repellent. Pharmacies (apteekki) and Lapland Central Hospital are in town.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency number in Finland and the EU).
