Rovaniemi on a budget: how to do it well
Short answer
Rovaniemi is hard but possible on a budget if you limit paid safaris. Plan on about €125 per person per day in winter (bed €45, food €35, sights €40, transport €5), less in summer.

| Bed (per person, sharing) | €45 | €85 | €220 |
| Food & drink | €35 | €60 | €110 |
| Sights & tickets | €40 | €140 | €250 |
| Local transport | €5 | €15 | €40 |
| Per person, per day | €125 | €300 | €620 |

Free things to do
- Walk around Santa Claus Village and cross the Arctic Circle line (entry free)
- Meet Santa in Santa's Office (the meeting is free; photos cost extra)
- Cross the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge and see its pillars lit at night
- See Lappia Hall by Alvar Aalto from outside
- Walk or ski the trails on Ounasvaara hill and look for the northern lights on clear nights
- Walk the Ounasjoki riverside between the centre and Arktikum
Cheap eats
- Karelian pie from a bakery or supermarket: about €1–3
- Cinnamon bun and filter coffee: about €7–10
- Weekday lunch buffet with soup, main and coffee: about €12–16
- Salmon soup with rye bread: about €14–20
- Supermarket smoked fish, rye bread and leipäjuusto for a picnic: well under €15
Where to sleep for less
Budget travellers stay in guesthouses and simpler hotels in the town centre, at about €70–120 a night for a double, and walk to restaurants and the bus. Prices rise sharply in December, especially around Christmas, so book months ahead for that period.
Getting around cheaply
The centre is small and walkable. Bus 8 links the centre, Santa Claus Village and the airport for a few euros, about 20 minutes. From Helsinki, the overnight sleeper train saves a night's accommodation; flights take about 1h20. Safaris include pick-ups, so you rarely need a car.
A sample budget day
- Morning: bus 8 to Santa Claus Village at opening time and cross the Arctic Circle (bus a few euros)
- Lunch: weekday lounas buffet in the centre (about €13)
- Afternoon: Arktikum museum (about €20) and a walk along the river
- Evening: supermarket dinner, then a walk up Ounasvaara to look for the aurora (free)
- Total: about €45–50 plus your bed (€45), so roughly €90–100 without a safari; one safari brings it well above €125
More ways to save
- Visit in late January, February or March outside school holidays for lower prices and more daylight.
- Book northern lights tours a day or two ahead, so you can pick a clear night.
- Download an aurora forecast app and a cloud-cover map; clear sky matters most.
- Bring your own warm base layers so you can stay out longer without hiring gear.
- Use your hotel's sauna rather than paying for a separate one.
- Buy beer at the supermarket; stronger alcohol is sold only in Alko stores and is expensive in bars.
