Is Quito safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Quito's main tourist areas are fine by day, but take care: pickpocketing is common, and Ecuador has seen a rise in crime in recent years, mostly in coastal cities such as Guayaquil. The realistic risks for visitors in Quito are theft, bag snatching and robberies at night. Check your government's advice before going.

The real risks

Pickpocketing and bag theft

Common in the Old Town, on buses and the Trolebús and at markets. Keep bags in front and avoid displaying phones.

Night-time robbery

In La Mariscal and the quieter Old Town streets at night. Use app taxis rather than walking.

Express kidnapping in street taxis

Rare but reported. Use app-based taxis or ones booked by your hotel.

Altitude

At 2,850 m, many visitors feel breathless or tired for a day or two.

Areas and times to take care

The Old Town is busy and well policed by day, but some streets empty after dark. La Mariscal has nightlife but higher crime at night; La Floresta and the area around Parque La Carolina are calmer. Avoid hiking to the Panecillo on foot; take a taxi.

Getting around safely

Use Uber, Cabify or hotel-booked taxis, especially at night. The Quito Metro is modern and safe. Long-distance buses from the Quitumbe and Carcelén terminals are generally safe; keep valuables with you.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women visit Quito often. Stay in the Old Town, La Floresta or near La Carolina, use app taxis at night and watch your drink in La Mariscal bars. Catcalling happens; ignore it.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. UV is very high at this altitude, so use sunscreen even on cloudy days. Take it easy for the first day to adjust to the altitude. Travel insurance is advisable.

Emergency: 911 (ECU 911)
