Is Puerto Vallarta safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Puerto Vallarta is one of the safer tourist destinations in Mexico, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are petty theft, timeshare and tour touts, strong surf and currents, and heat. Jalisco state has areas with cartel-related violence, but it rarely affects tourist areas; check official advice before travelling.
The real risks
Timeshare touts
People offering 'free' tours or breakfasts at the airport and on the Malecón usually sell timeshares; say no politely.
Strong surf
Some beaches have rough waves and currents; swim where others do and follow flags.
Petty theft
Watch belongings on beaches and in crowds.
Heat and sun
Summer highs about 30–31°C with high humidity; drink water and use sunscreen.
Regional security
Check official advice for Jalisco and avoid travelling by road at night outside the tourist zone.
Areas and times to take care
The Zona Romántica, Centro, the Malecón, Hotel Zone and Marina are busy and fine for visitors. Take normal care late at night, and use Uber or taxis rather than walking long distances after dark.
Getting around safely
Uber operates in town and is cheaper than airport taxis. City buses are safe by day. Use authorised water taxis and boat operators.
Solo and women travellers
Puerto Vallarta is generally comfortable for women travelling alone, and the Zona Romántica is friendly and lively. Watch drinks in bars and use Uber at night.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water; use bottled or purified water. Most restaurants use purified ice. Dengue occurs in the rainy season; use repellent.
