Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the largest share in high season, with resorts in the Hotel Zone, Marina and Conchas Chinas costing much more than old-town guesthouses. Boat tours (Los Arcos, Marietas Islands, whale watching) are the next big cost. Restaurants on the Malecón charge tourist prices, while street tacos and local fondas are cheap. Hotels add 16% VAT and a Jalisco lodging tax of a few percent.
When it is cheaper
May to October, the hot and rainy season, brings much lower hotel rates; Christmas, New Year and Easter week are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Stay in a Zona Romántica guesthouse instead of a resort.
- Eat street tacos and at fondas instead of Malecón restaurants.
- Use local buses (about MX$12–15) to the beaches and the Botanical Garden.
- Walk across the bridge outside the airport for cheaper buses and taxis.
- Book boat trips directly at the pier rather than through hotel desks.
- Pay in pesos rather than dollars for better rates.
