Is Puerto Escondido safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

For most visitors Puerto Escondido is safe with normal precautions, and the main tourist areas are busy and relaxed. The biggest risk is the sea: rip currents and heavy shorebreak at Zicatela injure people every year. Petty theft on beaches, taxis at night and isolated beaches after dark are the other things to manage; check current government advice for Oaxaca before you go.

The real risks

Rip currents and shorebreak

Do not swim at Zicatela or on open beaches with big waves. Swim at sheltered coves such as Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo, and check conditions every day.

Surfing beyond your level

The main Zicatela break is for experienced surfers only. Beginners should learn at La Punta or Carrizalillo with a school.

Theft on beaches

Do not leave phones, cash or bags unattended on the sand, and use your accommodation's safe.

Isolated beaches at night

Avoid empty beaches and dark paths after dark; stay in busy, lit areas.

Hurricanes and storms

Hurricanes are possible from about June to October. Follow local warnings and keep travel plans flexible.

Areas and times to take care

Zicatela, La Punta, Rinconada and El Adoquín are the main visitor areas and are busy in the evening. Take more care late at night on dark stretches of beach, on the stairways down to the coves and on quiet roads between beaches. Use a taxi rather than walking long distances after dark.

Getting around safely

Use registered taxis, especially at night, and agree the price first. Colectivos are fine by day. Shuttle vans from Oaxaca City are quicker than buses; book them a day ahead in high season, and travel by day on mountain roads. Choose licensed boat operators for tours, with life jackets.

Solo and women travellers

Puerto Escondido is popular with solo women, especially in La Punta and on the surf and yoga scene. Use the usual precautions: watch your drink in bars, arrange a taxi home and avoid walking alone on empty beaches or dark roads at night. Hostels and surf schools are a good way to meet people.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is not drinkable; use bottled or filtered water. Protect yourself from strong sun, heat and mosquitoes, as dengue occurs in the region, especially in the wet season. Bring insect repellent for the mangrove tours. Good travel insurance is essential, particularly if you surf.

Emergency: 911 (national emergency number).
