When it is cheaper
The wet season, roughly May to October outside Mexican holidays, usually has lower room prices. Prices are highest at Christmas, New Year and Easter, and in the dry-season months of December to March.
How to spend less
- Stay in La Punta, where hostels, surf camps and cheap restaurants are concentrated.
- Eat street food and at local market stalls, such as around the Mercado Benito Juárez.
- Agree taxi prices before getting in, and use colectivos on the main roads.
- Choose one or two paid tours and spend the other days at free beaches such as Carrizalillo, Puerto Angelito and Manzanillo.
- Fly from Mexico City only if fares are good; a shuttle van from Oaxaca City is often cheaper.
- Avoid Christmas, New Year and Easter if you are on a tight budget.
