Is Positano safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Positano is very safe, with little crime. The realistic risks are physical: endless steps, the narrow coast road with traffic and buses, heat on the Path of the Gods, and crowds on summer buses and ferries. Pickpocketing is uncommon but possible in crowds.
The real risks
Steps and slopes
The town is almost all steps; wear proper shoes and use the Interno bus to save your legs.
Path of the Gods
Rocky stretches without railings and little shade; walk from Bomerano to Nocelle, start early and carry water.
Coast road traffic
The road is narrow with no pavements in places; take care walking and avoid driving in summer.
Crowded buses and ferries
Keep bags closed and phones secure in summer crowds.
Sea and sun
Strong sun on the beaches; check flags and conditions before swimming.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on the steps after dark and on stretches of the main road without pavements.
Getting around safely
Use SITA buses, the local Interno bus and ferries. Buy bus tickets before boarding at tobacconists or newsstands. Taxis are expensive; agree the fare first. Driving is not recommended in summer.
Solo and women travellers
Positano is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply in the evening; the Path of the Gods is popular, so it is rarely empty in the main season.
Health, water and heat
Tap water in Italy is generally safe to drink. Summer heat and steps are tiring; carry water. Pharmacies are available; for serious cases, hospitals are in the larger towns of the area.
