Where the money goes
Accommodation dominates: even the cheaper rooms in the upper town or Chiesa Nuova cost €90–180, Fornillo €220–400, and hotels above Spiaggia Grande €550–1,500, plus a tourist tax of a few euros per person per night. Beachfront meals at €25–40 a main, sunbeds and boat trips to Li Galli or Capri add a lot. Getting there by private transfer is expensive; buses and ferries are much cheaper.
When it is cheaper
May, early June and late September to October are cheaper than July and August, sometimes by a third or more for rooms. From November to March prices drop sharply, but many hotels and restaurants close and ferries stop.
How to spend less
- Sleep in the upper town, Chiesa Nuova, Nocelle or Montepertuso for lower prices.
- Use the free public section of Spiaggia Grande or the cheaper clubs at Fornillo.
- Eat lunch and dinner in the upper town rather than by the beach.
- Buy a sandwich at a grocery shop for the Path of the Gods.
- Use SITA buses and ferries instead of private transfers or taxis.
- Consider Amalfi or Sorrento as a cheaper base with day trips to Positano.
