Is Portland safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Portland is generally safe for visitors, but downtown has visible homelessness, drug use and property crime that can feel uncomfortable. The realistic risks are car break-ins, petty theft and occasional disturbances downtown at night; violent crime against tourists is uncommon.

The real risks

Car break-ins

The most common crime affecting visitors, including at Gorge trailheads and Washington Park. Never leave anything visible in a car.

Petty theft

Watch bags and phones on MAX and in busy areas downtown and in Old Town.

Street disorder

Some downtown and Old Town/Chinatown blocks have open drug use and erratic behaviour, especially at night. Stay alert and walk on busy streets.

Wildfire smoke

Late summer wildfires in Oregon can bring poor air quality; check air-quality alerts.

Hiking hazards

Gorge trails can be slippery and steep; stay on paths near waterfalls.

Heatwaves

Occasional summer heatwaves pass 35°C; many older buildings lack air-conditioning.

Areas and times to take care

The Pearl District, Nob Hill, Washington Park and the east-side neighbourhoods (Hawthorne, Division, Alberta, Mississippi) are pleasant and busy. Take more care in parts of downtown and Old Town/Chinatown after dark, where there are more incidents; use rideshare if returning late. Parks are best visited in daylight.

Getting around safely

MAX, streetcar and buses are generally safe, but keep belongings close and move carriages if someone is behaving erratically. Uber and Lyft work well and are the easiest option late at night. Driving is easy; don't leave valuables in parked cars.

Solo and women travellers

Solo women generally find Portland friendly and easy-going. Stick to busy streets at night downtown, use rideshare to return late, and watch drinks in bars as anywhere. East-side neighbourhoods and the Pearl are comfortable to walk in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe and among the best in the US. Rain and cold are the main issues in winter; late-summer wildfire smoke can affect people with breathing problems. Healthcare is excellent but expensive, so travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 911 for police, fire and ambulance.
