Where the money goes
Hotels are the biggest cost: downtown and Pearl District doubles run about US$150–280, plus around 16–17% in combined lodging taxes. Restaurant meals are moderately priced, but tipping adds 18–20% at table service. Day trips to the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood or the Willamette Valley wineries need a car and add tasting fees. Food carts, the free Rose Test Garden, Powell's and the waterfront keep everyday costs down, and the absence of sales tax makes shopping cheaper than in neighbouring states.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices are usually lowest from November to March, during the rainy season, often 20–35% below July–September. Summer weekends and big events such as the Rose Festival in June are the most expensive.
How to spend less
- Eat at food-cart pods (US$12–18 a plate) instead of sit-down restaurants for lunch.
- Take MAX red line from the airport (about US$2.80) instead of a taxi or rideshare.
- Visit the free International Rose Test Garden, Powell's City of Books and the waterfront.
- Buy a day fare (about US$5.60) if you will use MAX, streetcar and buses several times.
- Shop in Oregon, where there is no sales tax.
- Stay in Southeast Portland near Hawthorne for cheaper guesthouses and hostels.
