Is Plovdiv safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Plovdiv is a safe city, and most visitors have no problems at all. The realistic risks are occasional pickpocketing, taxi overcharging and slippery cobbles in the Old Town. Violent crime against visitors is rare.
The real risks
Taxi overcharging
Use taxis from reputable companies with the fare displayed on the window and the meter running, or order one by phone or app.
Pickpocketing
Occasional on the busy main street and at crowded events. Keep bags closed.
Cobbles
The Old Town cobbles are large, uneven and slippery when wet. Wear flat shoes with grip.
Heat
July and August average about 33°C. Visit the hills early and carry water.
Money changing
Use bank ATMs rather than street money changers; check the rate and fees.
Areas and times to take care
The centre, the Old Town and Kapana are lively and fine to walk in the evening. As in any city, keep to busier streets late at night and be aware of your surroundings around the bus and train stations.
Getting around safely
Taxis are cheap but check the displayed rates before getting in. City buses are inexpensive. Buses to Sofia are usually faster than trains.
Solo and women travellers
Plovdiv is generally comfortable for solo women. Kapana and the main street are busy in the evening, and eating alone is normal. Usual precautions are enough; use a reputable taxi late at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally considered safe to drink in Plovdiv; bottled water is cheap if you prefer it. Sun protection is important in summer. Pharmacies are easy to find.
