Is Plovdiv expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
No — Plovdiv is one of the best-value city breaks in the EU, cheaper than Sofia's centre and far cheaper than Western Europe. Expect about €42 a day per person on a tight budget, about €86 mid-range and €175 or more for comfort. Sights cost a few euros each; most of the money goes on the room.

Where the money goes
Rooms take the biggest share: hostels in Kapana and near the main street start at about €35–60 for a double room, restored Revival houses in the Old Town about €60–110, and boutique hotels €110–200. Food is cheap — a full Bulgarian dinner with wine is about €15–25 per person — and Old Town restaurants are only slightly pricier than the rest of the centre. Sights cost a few euros each, and the centre is walkable, so transport is a minor cost except for the trip to Bachkovo.
When it is cheaper
Winter (November–March) is usually the cheapest, apart from holiday weekends. Prices rise a little in summer and during big events at the Antique Theatre.
How to spend less
- Bulgaria uses the euro since January 2026; check your change where old lev prices are still shown alongside.
- Buy a combined ticket for the Revival houses rather than paying for each separately.
- Eat in the centre or Kapana rather than on the most touristy Old Town terraces.
- Take the bus to Bachkovo from the Rhodope bus station instead of a private tour.
- Have lunch menus and banitsa breakfasts for the cheapest meals.
- Fly into Sofia, usually cheaper and with more flights, and take the bus (about 1.5–2 hours).
