Is Patmos safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Patmos is very safe, with very low crime and a quiet, religious character. The realistic risks are scooter accidents on narrow roads, the meltemi wind on boat trips, heat on walks and steep paths to some beaches.

The real risks

Scooters

Roads are short but narrow and steep in places; wear a helmet and ride slowly.

Meltemi wind

In July and August, afternoon wind can make the boats to Arki and Marathi rough or cancel them.

Heat on paths

The walk up to Chora and the path to Psili Ammos have little shade; go early with water.

Rocky entries

Some bays have rocks and sea urchins; wear water shoes.

Petty theft

Rare; take normal care at the port on cruise-ship days.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. Skala becomes busy when cruise ships call, and Chora is very quiet at night.

Getting around safely

Buses link Skala with Chora, Grikos and Kambos several times a day, and taxis wait at the port. Boats from Skala serve Psili Ammos and the nearby islands in summer.

Solo and women travellers

Patmos is very comfortable for women travelling alone, with a calm, family atmosphere. Cover shoulders and knees at the monastery and the cave; women may be asked to wear a skirt.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water; ask your host about the local supply. Sun protection and water are essential in summer. Patmos has basic medical services; serious cases are transferred to larger hospitals.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 100 police, 166 ambulance.
