Is Oslo safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Oslo is a very safe city for visitors, with low violent crime and a relaxed atmosphere. The realistic risks are pickpocketing around Oslo S and Karl Johans gate, icy pavements in winter and cold water around the fjord.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Occasional around Oslo S, Karl Johans gate and on crowded trams. Keep bags closed.
Ice and snow
Pavements are very slippery from December to March; wear shoes with grip or buy strap-on spikes.
Cold water
The fjord is cold even in summer; swim only at designated spots and be careful with sauna cold plunges.
Drug dealing
Visible around a few spots near the river and Oslo S at night; ignore and walk on.
Expensive taxis
Not a danger, but fares are very high; agree on an estimate or use an app.
Areas and times to take care
The city centre, Aker Brygge, Grünerløkka, Frogner and Bygdøy are all comfortable day and night. The area around Oslo S and parts of Grønland can feel rough late at night, but serious problems for visitors are rare.
Getting around safely
Metro, trams, buses and ferries are safe and run late, with night buses at weekends. Taxis are safe but expensive; Uber and Bolt also operate. The Flytoget express and NSB/Vy trains link the airport.
Solo and women travellers
Oslo is very safe for solo women. Normal precautions apply in nightlife areas and late at night around the central station.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe and excellent. In winter, dress in layers against cold and wind. In summer, use sun protection during the long days. Healthcare is very good but expensive for non-EEA visitors; take insurance.
