Is Nafplio safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Nafplio is a very safe town with little crime. The realistic issues are summer heat at the open archaeological sites, steep and slippery steps at Palamidi, and occasional overcharging at waterfront restaurants or sunbeds. Most visitors have no problems at all.

The real risks

Heat and sun

Inland sites like Mycenae reach 35°C or more in July and August with no shade. Go at opening, carry water and wear a hat.

Palamidi steps

The long stone stairway is steep, polished and exposed. Wear good shoes and climb before 9:00 in summer.

Overcharging

Waterfront restaurants with touts and fish sold by weight without a total. Read menus and agree prices first.

Sunbed minimum spends

Some beaches charge a minimum order for sunbeds that is mentioned only later. Ask first.

Driving

Greek drivers can be fast and roads to the sites are winding. Drive carefully, especially at night.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid in Nafplio. The old town and waterfront are lively and safe late into the evening. The Arvanitia promenade is pleasant at sunset; it is quiet late at night but safe.

Getting around safely

The old town is walkable. Taxis are available at the bus station and Syntagma Square; agree or check the meter. KTEL buses link Nafplio with Athens and the sites but are infrequent, so a rental car is easiest.

Solo and women travellers

Nafplio is very comfortable for solo women, including walking in the old town in the evening. Normal precautions are enough.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink, though many locals prefer bottled water. The summer sun is strong; use sunscreen and drink plenty of water at the sites. Pharmacies are easy to find; Nafplio has a general hospital. EU visitors should carry the European Health Insurance Card.

Emergency: 112 (all emergencies); police 100; ambulance 166.
