Is Nafplio expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Nafplio is moderately priced: cheaper than Athens or the big islands, but one of the pricier towns in the Peloponnese because it is a favourite weekend escape for Athenians. A budget traveller can manage on about €80 per person a day sharing a room, mid-range about €155 and comfort about €325. Taverna food is good value; archaeological tickets and old-town hotels are the main costs.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest item, especially in restored old-town mansions and at weekends, when Athenians fill the town. Archaeological sites have become more expensive (Mycenae and Epidaurus about €20 each), and a rental car is the easiest way to reach them. Food is reasonable, though waterfront restaurants charge more; fish priced by the kilo can quickly raise a bill.
When it is cheaper
November to March, outside Christmas and Carnival weekends, is cheaper, with hotel rates often roughly 20-40% below summer. Midweek stays are cheaper than weekends all year.
How to spend less
- Visit midweek, when hotel prices drop and the town is quieter.
- Stay in the new town or Pronoia, a 10-minute walk from the old town.
- Eat one or two streets back from the waterfront and Syntagma Square.
- Ask for the weight and total price of fish before it is cooked.
- Combine Mycenae and Tiryns in one car trip; Tiryns is cheap and almost empty.
- Check for free-entry days at Greek state sites, usually some Sundays in winter and on certain national days.
