Is Mauritius safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Mauritius is one of the safest destinations in Africa and the Indian Ocean, with low crime against tourists. The realistic risks are petty theft from beaches and cars, driving on the left on narrow roads, and sea conditions. Cyclones are a seasonal risk from January to March.

The real risks

Petty theft

Bags left on beaches, in rental cars or in unlocked rooms can be stolen. Use the hotel safe and keep valuables out of sight.

Road safety

Roads are narrow and busy, with buses and motorbikes; drive on the left and avoid driving at night in rural areas.

Sea conditions

Inside the reef, lagoons are calm, but currents outside it and near passes can be strong. Swim where others swim.

Sun

The tropical sun is strong all year; use high-SPF reef-safe sunscreen and a hat.

Cyclones

From roughly January to March, follow official cyclone warnings and your hotel's instructions.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas visitors need to avoid. Port Louis is busy by day and quiet after dark, so take a taxi in the evening rather than walking around the centre. Quiet public beaches after dark are where opportunistic theft is most likely.

Getting around safely

Rental cars are the easiest way to travel; drive on the left. Taxis are unmetered, so agree the fare first or book through your hotel. Buses are safe and cheap but slow and stop around evening. The Metro Express light rail is modern and safe.

Solo and women travellers

Women generally feel safe travelling alone in Mauritius. Usual precautions apply: avoid isolated beaches after dark, use taxis booked through your accommodation at night, and dress modestly at temples and in villages.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is treated in most areas, but many visitors prefer bottled or filtered water. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue occur occasionally, so use repellent. The sun and heat are the main health issues; drink plenty of water.
