Is Malta safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Malta is a safe destination with low crime, and most visitors have no problems. The realistic risks are petty theft in busy areas, rowdy nightlife in Paceville, and the traffic, plus heat and sea conditions in summer.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Possible on crowded buses, in Valletta and in St Julian's. Keep bags closed and phones in front pockets.

Paceville nightlife

St Julian's Paceville district gets crowded and rowdy late at night; watch drinks and belongings.

Traffic

Traffic is heavy, drives on the left and roads are narrow. Take care crossing streets and driving.

Sea and cliffs

Rough seas and slippery rocks at spots like the Blue Lagoon and Dwejra; obey red flags and avoid unsupervised cliff jumping.

Heat

July and August reach 31-32°C; drink water and avoid long walks at midday.

Areas and times to take care

Valletta, Sliema, Mdina, the Three Cities and Gozo are calm day and night. Paceville in St Julian's is the main area for late-night nightlife, where fights and theft happen occasionally; take normal care there after midnight.

Getting around safely

Buses are safe and cover the islands, though they can be crowded and slow in summer. Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Bolt, Uber and eCabs are widely used and inexpensive. Ferries between Valletta, Sliema and the Three Cities are reliable.

Solo and women travellers

Malta is safe for solo women. Usual precautions apply in Paceville late at night: keep drinks in sight and use a licensed taxi or ride-hailing app to get back.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe but desalinated and tastes of minerals; most people drink bottled water. Sun protection is essential from May to October. Healthcare is good; EU visitors should bring an EHIC or GHIC, others travel insurance.

Emergency: 112
