Is Kythira safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Kythira is a very safe, quiet island with very little crime. The realistic risks are driving on narrow island roads, heat and steep access to some beaches, and slippery paths in spring. Theft is not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Driving
Distances are long and roads narrow and winding; drive slowly, watch for goats and do not drink and drive.
Steep beach access
Kaladi is reached by about 100 steps with no shade; go in the morning and bring water.
Muddy or stony paths
The Mylopotamos watermills path can be muddy in spring, and Paleochora's paths are stony; wear good shoes.
Sun and heat
July and August reach about 31–32°C; carry water on walks and to beaches without facilities.
Remote sites
Paleochora and some coves have no facilities; tell someone your plans.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Take care on cliff edges at the castle of Chora and Paleochora, and on unlit village roads at night.
Getting around safely
A car is the only practical option. Taxis are few, so book ahead for ferry or flight times. Check ferry timetables in advance, as crossings can be affected by wind.
Solo and women travellers
Kythira is very comfortable for women travelling alone. Normal precautions apply; tell your host where you plan to walk or swim if going somewhere remote.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is not generally recommended for drinking; buy bottled or ask your host. Summer sun is strong. There is a health centre on the island; serious cases go to the mainland, so travel insurance is important.
