Is Kythira expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kythira is good value for a Greek island: noticeably cheaper than the Cyclades, with prices aimed largely at Greek visitors. A budget traveller needs about €65 a day, mid-range about €130 and comfort about €260 per person, assuming a shared rental car. Rooms and the car take most of the money; most sights are free or cost a few euros.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, from €40–70 in Potamos or Livadi to €150–300 in restored houses in Avlemonas, Chora or the villages, plus Greece's per-room, per-night climate resilience fee. A car is essential, as buses are rare. Getting there by ferry from Neapoli or a flight from Athens is a separate expense. Tavernas are fairly priced; fish is sold by weight.
When it is cheaper
May, June and September are cheaper than late July and August, when Greek holidaymakers fill the island. Many hotels close from November to April.
How to spend less
- Stay in Potamos or Livadi for the cheapest rooms.
- Book a small car ahead for July and August, when fleets run out.
- Take the short ferry from Neapoli rather than the longer, less frequent routes.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fish.
- Buy honey, rusks and oil at the Sunday market in Potamos or village shops rather than in Chora's gift shops.
- Choose free beaches and walks: Kaladi, the Mylopotamos watermills and the castle of Chora cost nothing.
