Is Krabi safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Krabi is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of violent crime. The realistic risks are road accidents on scooters, boat and sea safety, monsoon conditions, and minor scams such as overpriced seafood or commission-driven drivers.

The real risks

Scooter accidents

Roads are busy and accidents are common; ride only with a valid licence, a helmet and insurance that covers it.

Boats and sea conditions

Choose operators with life jackets, and avoid trips in rough monsoon seas; strong currents can occur at beaches from May to October.

Monkeys

At Tiger Cave Temple and Railay, monkeys grab food and bags; carry only water.

Seafood pricing

Restaurants may display fish without prices and charge heavily by weight; ask first.

Commission scams

Some drivers steer you to restaurants or shops where they earn commission; choose your own.

Sun and dehydration

Highs are about 29–34°C year-round; drink plenty and use sun protection.

Areas and times to take care

There are no well-known no-go areas. Ao Nang and Railay are busy in the evening; take normal care with drinks and valuables in beach bars, and avoid walking alone on dark beaches late at night.

Getting around safely

Use songthaews, Grab or registered taxis, and agree fares in advance where there is no meter. On boats, wear a life jacket and check that the operator is licensed. Avoid driving scooters at night or after drinking.

Solo and women travellers

Krabi is popular with solo women and generally comfortable. Take the usual care with drinks in bars, use registered transport at night, and dress modestly in Krabi Town and at temples.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; bottled and filtered water is widely available. Heat, sun and mosquito-borne illnesses such as dengue are the main health concerns, especially in the rainy season. Private hospitals in Krabi Town handle most issues; travel insurance is essential.

Emergency: 191 police, 1669 ambulance, 1155 tourist police (English-speaking).
