Is Kefalonia safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Kefalonia is a very safe island, with very little crime against visitors. The realistic risks are driving on narrow mountain roads, strong waves at some beaches, sun and summer wildfires. Walking around villages at night is safe.
The real risks
Driving
Roads are narrow, winding and often unlit, with steep drops and hairpins, such as the road down to Myrtos. Drive slowly, avoid driving after drinking, and be careful with quad bikes and scooters, which are involved in many accidents.
Beaches
Myrtos and other west-coast beaches shelve steeply and can have strong waves. Swim only in calm conditions and watch children closely.
Wildfires
In hot, dry, windy weather, wildfires can break out in summer. Follow official alerts (112 messages) and local instructions.
Heat and sun
July and August highs reach 31–32°C. Use sunscreen, wear a hat and carry water, especially on walks to Assos castle.
Petty theft
Rare, but do not leave valuables in cars at beaches or unattended on the sand.
Areas and times to take care
All towns and villages, including Argostoli, Sami, Fiskardo and Lassi, are safe to walk in the evening. There are no areas visitors need to avoid; the main precautions are road-related.
Getting around safely
Taxis are available in Argostoli, at the airport and in the main villages; agree the fare or check the meter. KTEL buses are safe but infrequent. If you hire a car, check the insurance and whether you can take it on the ferry to Ithaca. Drive carefully on mountain roads and watch for goats.
Solo and women travellers
Kefalonia is generally very comfortable for solo women. It is normal to eat alone in tavernas or sit at a beach bar. Take the usual precautions in bars late at night, such as watching your drink, and use a taxi rather than walking on unlit roads between villages.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe, but it may be hard or slightly salty in some areas, so many visitors drink bottled water. Heat and sun are the main issues in summer. There are health centres in the main towns and a hospital in Argostoli; EU visitors should carry their EHIC card.
