Is Kefalonia expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kefalonia is moderately priced for a Greek island: cheaper than Mykonos or Santorini, a little more expensive than mainland Greece, and good value compared with much of Western Europe. Plan on about €80 a day per person on a budget, €160 mid-range and €355 for comfort in high season. Rooms and a rental car take most of the money; taverna meals remain fair.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the biggest cost, especially in Fiskardo and Assos and from mid-July to the end of August, and Greece adds a per-room climate resilience fee every night. A rental car is almost essential because the island is large and mountainous and buses are infrequent, so car hire and fuel are the second largest item. Food is reasonably priced in tavernas, but fresh fish sold by weight is expensive. Sights are cheap — the caves cost a few euros each and the best beaches are free, although organised beaches charge for sunbeds.
When it is cheaper
May, early June, late September and October are noticeably cheaper than July and August, with room and car prices often well below peak levels. From November to April, many hotels and tavernas close.
How to spend less
- Book your rental car early for July and August; prices rise and cars sell out.
- Stay in Argostoli or Lassi for cheaper rooms and an easy airport transfer.
- Bring or buy a cheap umbrella and avoid paying for sunbeds on every beach.
- Arrive at Melissani at opening to avoid the midday queue, rather than paying for a tour.
- Ask the price per kilo before ordering fresh fish.
- Buy picnic food and water in Argostoli supermarkets before driving north; there are few shops on the way to Fiskardo.
