Is Kazakhstan safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Kazakhstan is generally safe for visitors, with low levels of crime against tourists in Almaty and Astana. The realistic risks are road traffic, unlicensed taxis, petty theft and mountain weather. Political protests are rare but have turned serious in the past (January 2022), so avoid demonstrations.

The real risks

Road safety

Driving can be fast and aggressive, and mountain roads are steep. Choose reputable drivers and wear seat belts.

Unlicensed taxis

Avoid unmarked cars at the airport and stations; use Yandex Go or official taxis.

Petty theft

Pickpocketing occurs at the Green Bazaar and on crowded buses. Keep phones and wallets secure.

Mountain conditions

Weather changes fast at Shymbulak, Big Almaty Lake and the Tian Shan; carry warm layers and do not hike alone.

Police document checks

Carry your passport or a copy, as police can ask for ID; be polite and patient.

Areas and times to take care

Central Almaty and Astana's Left Bank are generally calm at all hours. Take more care at night around bus and train stations, and in nightlife areas late at weekends. In the mountains, stay on marked trails and respect closures, especially in avalanche season.

Getting around safely

Yandex Go is the easiest and safest taxi option in cities. Almaty's metro and buses are safe and cheap. For Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, book a tour or a driver through a reputable agency, and avoid driving on mountain roads at night.

Solo and women travellers

Women travelling alone generally find Kazakhstan safe and hospitable. Almaty is relatively liberal, while rural areas are more conservative, so dress modestly outside the cities. Use Yandex Go at night and choose group tours for remote areas.

Health, water and heat

Tap water in Almaty is often considered drinkable but many visitors prefer bottled or boiled water. Altitude can be noticeable at Shymbulak (about 3,200 m at the top) and Big Almaty Lake (2,511 m). Summers in Almaty reach about 30-32°C, while winters fall well below freezing, so pack for the season. Ticks are present in mountain forests in spring and early summer.

Emergency: 112 (general); police 102, ambulance 103, fire 101
