Is Kazakhstan expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Kazakhstan is good value by European standards and cheaper than most of the Gulf or Turkey for rooms and transport, though pricier than Kyrgyzstan or Uzbekistan. A mid-range day is about ₸54,000 (very roughly US$110) per person, and the big extra cost is reaching the mountain lakes and canyons, which need a tour or driver. Food and city transport are cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation in Almaty and Astana costs about ₸30,000-55,000 for a mid-range double, and transport is the other big share: day tours or a car with driver to Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, plus the Almaty-Astana flight or overnight train. Restaurant food is good value, especially Uyghur and Kazakh places, while international hotels and Western-style cafes on Abay Avenue cost more. City buses, the metro and Yandex Go taxis are cheap.
When it is cheaper
Hotels are usually cheaper in late autumn and spring outside holidays, while the ski season at Shymbulak (December to March) and summer weekends raise mountain prices. Expect savings of perhaps 10-25% in the quieter months; check current rates.
How to spend less
- Use Yandex Go for taxis; fares are shown upfront and much cheaper than hotel cars.
- Take bus 12 to Medeu (about ₸200) instead of a taxi.
- Join shared tours to Big Almaty Lake, Charyn and Kolsai rather than hiring a private driver alone.
- Eat at Uyghur canteens and stolovaya (cafeterias) for cheap, filling meals.
- Take the overnight Talgo train between Almaty and Astana to save a hotel night.
- Pay by card or Kaspi where possible; it is widely accepted and avoids carrying cash.
