Is Jakarta safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Jakarta is generally safe for visitors, with violent crime against tourists rare. The realistic risks are traffic, pickpocketing and phone snatching in crowds and on buses, taxi scams with unlicensed drivers, and flooding in the rainy season. Terrorism is a low but present risk, as in much of the region.

The real risks

Traffic

Crossing roads is the biggest everyday danger; use pedestrian bridges and crossings.

Pickpocketing and snatch theft

On crowded buses, in markets and from motorbikes; keep phones away from the roadside.

Unlicensed taxis

Use Bluebird, Grab or Gojek; avoid drivers offering rides at the airport arrivals hall.

Flooding

December to February can bring floods that close roads; check news and allow extra time.

Air quality

Pollution can be high, especially in the dry season; check daily air quality if sensitive.

Areas and times to take care

Central areas like Menteng, Thamrin, Sudirman and Kemang are fine for visitors. Kota Tua is busy by day; take care at night in quieter old-town streets and around large stations. Local advice is useful before exploring unfamiliar areas after dark.

Getting around safely

Use Bluebird taxis, Grab or Gojek, the MRT and TransJakarta. Women-only carriages exist on commuter trains and some buses. Avoid unlicensed taxis.

Solo and women travellers

Jakarta is generally manageable for women travelling alone. Dress modestly outside malls and nightlife areas, use app-based transport at night and women-only carriages where available. Ramadan calls for extra sensitivity about eating in public by day.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Dengue is common in the rainy season, so use repellent. The heat (about 30–34°C) and humidity are constant; drink plenty. Air pollution can be significant.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 110 police, 118 or 119 ambulance.
