Is Jakarta expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Jakarta is cheap by Western standards, though more expensive than most of Indonesia outside Bali. A budget day is about Rp450,000 per person (roughly US$27–30), mid-range about Rp1,200,000, and the money goes on hotels, malls and imported drinks, while street food and transport are very cheap.

Where the money goes
Accommodation takes the largest share, and hotels often add about 10% tax and service on top of quoted rates. Beer and wine are heavily taxed and expensive compared with food. International restaurants and rooftop bars in SCBD and Thamrin charge close to Western prices. Street food, MRT, TransJakarta and ride-hailing are very cheap, so local days are inexpensive. Day trips to the Thousand Islands add about Rp500,000–1,000,000.
When it is cheaper
Hotel prices in Jakarta vary less by season than by events; around Lebaran (Eid) the city empties and some hotels discount, but transport out of town sells out and gets expensive.
How to spend less
- Use the MRT and TransJakarta with a contactless e-money card.
- Take the airport train to BNI City rather than a taxi in heavy traffic.
- Eat at warungs and street stalls such as those on Jalan Sabang.
- Use Grab or Gojek motorbike taxis for short trips.
- Stay in Jalan Jaksa or Blok M for cheaper rooms near transit.
- Drink local soft drinks or tea instead of taxed alcohol.
