Is Ioannina safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Ioannina is very safe, with low crime and a lively, student atmosphere. The realistic risks are mountain driving and hiking in Zagori, slippery stones in the Kastro and fog or snow in winter.
The real risks
Mountain roads
Roads to Zagori are paved but narrow and winding; allow 45–60 minutes each way and drive slowly.
Hiking in the Vikos Gorge
The gorge path is rough and long; carry water, wear boots and check the weather and daylight.
Slippery paths
Kastro lanes and stone bridges are polished and slippery when wet.
Winter conditions
Fog over the lake and snow in the mountains are common in winter; check road conditions.
Heat at Dodona
The site has little shade; visit late afternoon in summer.
Nightlife
Student bars are busy late; take normal care with drinks and valuables.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. The centre, the Kastro and the Mole are busy into the evening. Lanes inside the Kastro are quiet at night, but safe.
Getting around safely
Taxis are easy to find in the centre and at the airport (about €10–15 to town). KTEL buses are safe but infrequent to the villages. Drive carefully on mountain roads.
Solo and women travellers
Ioannina is comfortable for solo women, with a busy, student-heavy centre and low crime. For Zagori hikes, go with a group or tell someone your route.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe, though many visitors drink bottled water. July can reach about 32°C, while winters are cold and damp. The city has a university hospital; travel insurance is recommended.
