How many days in Ioannina? 3 days: the castle, the lake island and Zagori
By Tony Panopoulos · travel-agency planner in Greece · Updated
Ioannina is the capital of Epirus, a university city of about 110,000 people on the shore of Lake Pamvotis, with a walled Ottoman old town that is still lived in. It is the city of Ali Pasha, who ruled much of western Greece and Albania from here until 1822, and the gateway to the stone villages of Zagori. Give it three days: one for the castle and the lake, one for the cave and the oracle at Dodona, and one in the mountains.
Short answer
Two days covers the Kastro, the island on the lake, Perama Cave and the lakeside cafes. A third day is needed for Zagori, the Vikos Gorge and the stone bridges, about an hour away.
The 3-day plan, day by day
Day 1: The Kastro, Its Kale and the lakeshore
Morning. Enter the Kastro, the walled old town, by the main gate near the lake and walk its lanes of Ottoman houses and the old Jewish quarter. Climb to Its Kale, the inner citadel, where the Fethiye Mosque stands beside the grave traditionally said to be Ali Pasha's, and visit the Byzantine Museum in the restored palace building (a few euros; check hours).
Afternoon. In the bastion of Its Kale, the Silversmithing Museum tells the story of the craft that made Ioannina famous, with filigree jewellery and church silver. Then walk to the Aslan Pasha Mosque in the north-east corner of the Kastro, now home to the Municipal Ethnographic Museum, with its view over the water.
Evening. Walk along the lakeside promenade, the Mole, for sunset over the mountains, then have dinner in the old town near the clock tower and Pyrrou Square. A full meal with tsipouro costs about €15-25 per person.
The Kastro is not a ticketed site; you can walk its lanes at any hour. The museums inside it close earlier, and some close one day a week.
Day 2: The island, Perama Cave and Dodona
Morning. Take the small boat from the Mole to the island in the lake, about 10 minutes, with departures roughly every 30 minutes in summer (about €2-3). Walk through the fishing village to the monastery of Agios Panteleimon, where Ali Pasha was killed in 1822; the small museum shows the bullet holes in the floor. Several other Byzantine monasteries on the island have painted interiors.
Afternoon. Drive or take a taxi about 4 km to Perama Cave, discovered in 1940, with stalactites and stalagmites along a guided route of about 45 minutes (around €10; check current prices). Then continue 22 km south-west to Dodona, the oldest oracle of ancient Greece, where the theatre once held around 17,000 people (around €8).
Evening. Back in Ioannina, try the lake specialities on the island or by the shore: frogs' legs and eel, fried or grilled, or trout. Then go for a drink in the bars around the university streets.
Dodona is quiet and open, with little shade. Visit it in the late afternoon in summer, and check closing times, which are earlier from November to March.
Day 3: Zagori: Vikos Gorge and the stone bridges
Morning. Drive about 45 minutes north to Monodendri, a stone village of Central Zagori. Walk 15 minutes to the monastery of Agia Paraskevi on the edge of the Vikos Gorge, then drive up to the Oxya viewpoint for the classic view down into the gorge.
Afternoon. On the way back, stop at Kipi to see the three-arched Kalogeriko bridge and the smaller stone bridges of the area, built in the 18th and 19th centuries for mules and shepherds. If you have time and energy, the walk from Monodendri down into the gorge and back takes 2-3 hours.
Evening. Have dinner in a Zagori village, where tavernas serve pies, lamb and wild greens by the fireplace, before driving back to Ioannina; or stay the night in a stone guesthouse in Papingo or Aristi.
Zagori has very little public transport. Rent a car in Ioannina (about €35-60 a day) or book a day tour; mountain roads are narrow, so allow extra time.
Only have 2 days?
With 2 days, do Day 1 as written and combine the island and Perama Cave in the morning of Day 2 with a short drive to Monodendri and the Vikos Gorge viewpoints in the afternoon. You lose Dodona.
Got extra days?
A 4th day can go to Metsovo, a mountain town about 50 minutes east on the Egnatia motorway, known for its smoked cheese and its art gallery, or further into Zagori to Papingo for the walk to the natural pools near the village.

Getting around
The centre is walkable: Pyrrou Square to the castle gate is about 10 minutes. Ioannina airport has flights from Athens of about 1 hour, and a taxi to the centre costs roughly €10-15. KTEL buses come from Athens in about 6 hours and from Thessaloniki in about 3.5 hours via the Egnatia motorway; check current timetables. The boats to the island leave from the Mole. For Perama, Dodona and Zagori, a rental car or taxi is easiest; local buses are infrequent.
What to eat in Ioannina
Ioannina is one of the best food cities in Greece and is known for its pies (pites): savoury pastries with cheese, greens, leeks or meat, sold in bakeries from early morning. Breakfast on bougatsa filled with cheese or cream. From the lake come frogs' legs and eel, served in tavernas on the island and by the shore. Try kontosouvli, lamb from the mountains and trout. For dessert, Ioannina baklava and syrup sweets from the old pastry shops near the centre. In the evening, order tsipouro in a tsipouradiko: each round of small glasses comes with free meze. A full meal costs about €15-25 per person.
Best time to visit
April to June and September to October, with 18-28°C and green or golden mountains. July and August are warm (around 30-33°C) but far cooler than Athens, and Zagori is pleasant for walking. Winter is cold and damp, often foggy over the lake, with snow in the mountains; the city is lively then because of its students.
What a day costs

Common questions
Can I visit Zagori without a car?
With difficulty. Local KTEL buses to the Zagori villages run only a few times a week and at times that suit residents, not visitors. The practical options are renting a car in Ioannina, taking a taxi for the day, or booking a guided day tour. Roads are paved but narrow and winding, so plan about 45-60 minutes each way.
Is Ioannina worth it without Zagori?
Yes, for two days. The Kastro and Its Kale, the island in the lake, Perama Cave and Dodona make a full city break, and the food alone is a reason to come. But if you are already in Epirus, add at least one day in Zagori for the Vikos Gorge and the stone bridges.
How long does the boat to the island take?
About 10 minutes from the Mole, the jetty by the castle walls. Boats run roughly every 30 minutes in summer and less often in winter, usually from morning until late evening; the last return is posted at the jetty. A return ticket costs a few euros. Allow 2-3 hours on the island for the monasteries and lunch.
What is the best way from Athens to Ioannina?
Flying takes about 1 hour and is the fastest option. By KTEL bus from Kifissos station it takes around 6 hours, and by car about 4.5-5 hours on the Ionia Odos motorway via the Rio-Antirrio bridge, with tolls. From Thessaloniki, the Egnatia motorway takes about 3-3.5 hours.
