Is Interlaken safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Interlaken is very safe from crime. The realistic risks come from the mountains and adventure sports: weather changes, steep trails, altitude at the Jungfraujoch and the safety of paragliding, canyoning and similar activities. Theft is rare but can happen in busy hostels and stations.

The real risks

Mountain weather

Fog, thunderstorms and snow can arrive quickly even in summer; check MeteoSwiss, carry layers and turn back if conditions worsen.

Hiking falls

Trails can be steep, exposed and slippery; wear proper boots and stick to marked paths (white-red-white markings).

Altitude

The Jungfraujoch is at about 3,450 metres; move slowly and descend if you feel dizzy or unwell.

Adventure sports

Book paragliding, canyoning and skydiving only with licensed, established operators and check weather cancellation policies.

Theft in hostels

Use lockers in dorms and keep valuables with you on trains.

Areas and times to take care

There are no unsafe areas. Take care on narrow mountain paths, near glacier edges and on rivers such as the Aare and Lütschine, which are fast and very cold.

Getting around safely

Trains, buses, boats and cable cars are safe and punctual. Taxis are licensed but expensive. Do not drive to Wengen or Mürren, which are car-free; use the train or cable car.

Solo and women travellers

Interlaken is very comfortable for women alone, with many solo travellers in hostels. Usual nightlife precautions apply in the town's bars. Tell someone your hiking route and expected return time.

Health, water and heat

Tap water and fountains marked as drinkable are safe. UV is strong at altitude and on snow; wear sunglasses and sunscreen. Healthcare is excellent but very expensive, and mountain rescue by helicopter can cost thousands of francs, so travel insurance with rescue cover is essential.

Emergency: 112 for all emergencies; 117 police, 144 ambulance, 1414 Rega air rescue.
