Is Hydra safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Hydra is extremely safe, with almost no crime and no cars or motorbikes. The realistic risks are slippery, steep stone steps, sun and heat on walks to the monasteries, and sea conditions when swimming from the rocks.
The real risks
Steps and polished stones
The town is built on steep, polished stone steps that become slippery, especially when wet or at night. Wear shoes with grip.
Heat on walks
The climb to Profitis Ilias has little shade; start early and carry water.
Swimming from rocks
The rocks at Spilia and Hydronetta drop into deep water. Use the ladders, check the sea state and watch for boat traffic.
Donkeys
Donkeys and mules carry goods through the lanes; step aside and do not stand behind them.
Ferry disruptions
Strong winds can cancel fast ferries; keep a buffer before flights from Athens.
Wildfire risk
On hot, windy days, follow fire warnings and never light fires.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. The port is busy until late in summer; the upper town and the paths are dark at night, so carry a torch on the way to Kamini or Vlychos after sunset.
Getting around safely
There are no cars, motorbikes or taxis on land: walk, use water taxis from the port, or hire donkey porters for luggage. Water taxis run late in summer; agree the price at the stand.
Solo and women travellers
Hydra is a very comfortable place for solo women, with a calm, artistic atmosphere and very low crime. The main practical issue is walking dark, steep paths at night; carry a torch or take a water taxi back.
Health, water and heat
Tap water on Hydra is not generally drunk (the island relies on desalination and delivered water); drink bottled water. Heat, sun and dehydration are the main risks in summer. There is a health centre on the island; serious cases go to the mainland, so travel insurance is important.
