Is Hoi An safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Hoi An is a very safe, relaxed town with little serious crime against visitors. The realistic risks are overcharging, petty theft from bags and bikes, and road traffic outside the pedestrian streets. The rainy season floods are the main natural hazard.

The real risks

Overcharging and unpriced menus

Beach restaurants with 'market price' seafood and boat sellers can change prices. Agree the price and duration first.

Copycat shops

Fake versions of famous bánh mì or chicken rice shops sit near the originals. Check the exact address.

Bag snatching

Occasional snatches from passing motorbikes happen; keep phones away from the road side.

Traffic

Outside the Ancient Town, motorbikes are everywhere. Walk steadily when crossing and wear a helmet on a scooter.

Floods

In October and November the Thu Bon river often floods the Ancient Town; follow your hotel's advice and do not walk through fast water.

Areas and times to take care

The Ancient Town, An Bang and Cua Dai are generally safe at all hours. The night market and riverside are busy and crowded, so watch your bag. Unlit rural roads between the town and the beaches can be dark at night; use a light on your bike or take a Grab.

Getting around safely

Walk or cycle in town. Use Grab for longer trips and to Da Nang airport, which avoids price negotiation. If you rent a scooter, you need a valid licence and insurance; many travel insurers will not cover accidents without one.

Solo and women travellers

Hoi An is one of the easiest places in Vietnam for women travelling alone: friendly, compact and busy in the evening. Usual precautions apply in bars at night and on dark roads to the beach. Choose homestays with good reviews and use Grab at night.

Health, water and heat

Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Summer heat often reaches 33-35°C, so rest at midday and drink plenty. Use repellent against mosquitoes, as dengue occurs. Street food at busy stalls is generally safe.

Emergency: 113 police, 114 fire, 115 ambulance
