Is Hoi An expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Hoi An is cheap by any Western standard, though it is one of the pricier towns in Vietnam because of its popularity. A mid-range day is about VND 1,900,000 (roughly €70) per person, and a budget day can be about VND 700,000 (roughly €25). The money traps are tailored clothes, riverside restaurants in the Ancient Town and unpriced seafood.

Where the money goes
Rooms are the biggest share: family homestays near the Ancient Town cost VND 400,000-800,000, riverside hotels with pools VND 1,000,000-2,000,000 and beach resorts much more. Food is very cheap if you eat local dishes, but sit-down riverside restaurants charge several times market prices. Activities such as cooking classes (about US$25-40), basket boats and My Son tours add up. The biggest optional expense is tailoring, where a suit costs about US$100-250 depending on fabric and tailor.
When it is cheaper
Prices drop in the rainy season from September to December, often by 20-40% at hotels (check current rates), but October and November bring flooding in the Ancient Town. Summer (May-August) is hot but still reasonable outside Vietnamese holidays.
How to spend less
- Eat at the Central Market and street stalls for cao lầu, Quang noodles and chicken rice.
- Use the free bicycles most hotels lend instead of taxis.
- Pick only the five Ancient Town sites that interest you; the ticket covers five.
- Agree tailor prices, fabric and fittings in writing and allow at least two fittings.
- Ask the price per kilo and see seafood weighed before it is cooked.
- Book cooking classes directly in Tra Que rather than through resellers.
