Is Gozo safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Gozo is very safe, with low crime and a quiet village atmosphere. The realistic risks are rough seas at exposed swimming spots, narrow roads with driving on the left, and summer sun.
The real risks
Rough seas
Do not swim at Dwejra, the Blue Hole or Wied il-Għasri in rough seas; conditions change quickly.
Driving on the left
Roads are narrow and winding; drive slowly and watch for tight bends.
Cliff edges
Keep back from the edges at Dwejra, Xlendi and Ta' Ċenċ; rock is crumbly.
Sun and heat
There is little shade at the beaches and temples in summer.
Crowded boats
The Blue Lagoon is crowded in summer; check the visitor booking system and boat times.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. Victoria and the village squares are safe and friendly in the evening.
Getting around safely
Buses are safe and start from Victoria; taxis wait at Mġarr harbour and can be booked by phone. Drive carefully on narrow roads and check that your hire contract allows the ferry.
Solo and women travellers
Gozo is comfortable for women travelling alone. Village life is conservative but welcoming; usual precautions apply on empty coastal paths at night.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally considered safe, but many residents drink bottled water because of the taste. Use sun protection and drink plenty of water in summer. Gozo General Hospital is in Victoria.
