Where the money goes
Rooms are the largest cost, from Victoria guesthouses to farmhouses with pools. A hire car (about €30–50 a day) is the next big item if you want to reach the small inlets. Food is fair value in village restaurants, and pastizzi and ftira are cheap. Sights are inexpensive, but diving and boat trips add up. Malta adds an eco-contribution of €0.50 per person per night, up to €5 per stay.
When it is cheaper
Rooms are cheaper from November to March, outside holiday periods, and in shoulder months than in July and August, when Maltese families and summer visitors fill the island.
How to spend less
- Stay in Victoria, the hub of the bus network, rather than in the resorts.
- Use the ferry from Ċirkewwa: you pay only on the way back.
- Eat pastizzi and ftira for lunch instead of a full restaurant meal.
- Hire a car only for one or two days of exploring.
- Buy salt from the salt-pan families and ġbejniet from village shops.
- Book dive packages rather than single dives.
