Is Galaxidi safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Galaxidi is a very safe, quiet harbour town, and crime against visitors is rare. The realistic risks are summer heat, slippery rocks when swimming, and driving on winding mountain roads to Delphi and Arachova. Pickpocketing and scams are not a concern for most visitors.
The real risks
Heat
Summer highs reach about 33°C, and the Delphi site is steep and exposed. Walk in the morning or late afternoon, and carry at least a litre of water each.
Swimming from rocks
Most swimming is from flat rocks and pebble coves. Wear water shoes, watch for sea urchins and take care getting in and out.
Mountain roads
Roads to Delphi, Arachova and Hosios Loukas are winding, and in winter the Parnassus area can have ice and snow. Drive carefully and check conditions.
Clean Monday crowds
During the flour war the harbour is packed and messy. Protect phones and cameras, and keep an eye on children.
Little midday shade
There is little shade on the waterfront at midday in summer; plan your walks around it.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas in Galaxidi that visitors need to avoid. The harbours, the lanes of the upper town and the shoreline path are fine to walk in the evening. On the shoreline path and rocks, take a torch after dark, as the ground is uneven and parts are unlit.
Getting around safely
KTEL buses from Athens run towards Itea and Galaxidi, often changing at Amfissa, in about 3–3.5 hours; services are limited, so check timetables. Local buses to Delphi are infrequent, and taxis can be called from Itea. If you drive, take your time on mountain roads and avoid driving after drinking.
Solo and women travellers
Galaxidi is generally comfortable for solo women. The harbour is busy and well lit in the evening, and eating alone in tavernas is normal. The town is very quiet on winter weekdays. Usual precautions apply on remote stretches of the shoreline path after dark.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is generally safe; ask your host if unsure. Sun and dehydration are the main summer issues, especially at Delphi. Larger hospitals are in Amfissa and Athens, so travel insurance is important. Carry any regular medicines with you.
