Is Dubrovnik safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Dubrovnik is very safe, with low crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing in crowds when cruise ships are in, heat and many steps in summer, slippery polished stone and overpriced restaurants. Violent crime is rare.
The real risks
Pickpocketing
Possible on the Stradun, at Pile Gate and on crowded buses when several cruise ships are in port.
Heat on the walls
The walls have little shade; go early, carry water and wear a hat.
Slippery stone
The Stradun's polished limestone is slick when wet; wear shoes with grip.
Cliff jumping and rocks
Rocky swimming spots can be dangerous; check depth and avoid jumping.
Overcharging
Check menu prices and fish priced by weight before ordering.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. The Old Town is very busy by day and calm at night. Noise from bars can be an issue in Old Town apartments.
Getting around safely
Libertas buses are safe and frequent. Taxis and Uber operate; agree fares for taxi boats. Drive carefully on the coast road and park outside the centre.
Solo and women travellers
Dubrovnik is comfortable for women travelling alone; the Old Town is well lit and busy in the evening. Usual precautions in bars apply.
Health, water and heat
Tap water is safe. July and August highs are about 30–31°C, so stay hydrated. Wear water shoes on rocky beaches because of sea urchins.
