Is Dominican Republic safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Most visits to the Dominican Republic are trouble-free, especially in tourist areas, but crime levels are higher than in Europe and visitors should take normal precautions. The realistic risks are petty theft, motorbike bag snatching, scams and, above all, dangerous roads. Resort areas and the Zona Colonial are well policed.
The real risks
Bag and phone snatching
Thieves on motorbikes grab phones and bags in cities. Keep phones away from the roadside and carry bags across your body.
Road safety
Driving is aggressive and accidents are common, especially at night. Use buses or drivers and avoid night driving.
Motoconchos
Motorbike taxis are convenient but risky; wear the helmet, agree the price first and avoid them at night.
Scams and overcharging
Unofficial guides, inflated prices and taxi overcharging are common. Agree prices first and use Uber where possible.
Drink spiking and counterfeit alcohol
Buy drinks in reputable places, watch your glass and avoid very cheap unbranded spirits.
Areas and times to take care
The Zona Colonial, Piantini and Naco in Santo Domingo, and tourist towns like Las Terrenas and Bayahíbe are generally fine by day. At night, take Uber rather than walking long distances, even in the Zona Colonial. Some outer neighbourhoods of Santo Domingo have higher crime, but visitors rarely have reason to go there.
Getting around safely
Use Uber in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, or taxis booked through hotels. Intercity coaches (Caribe Tours, Metro Tours, Expreso Bávaro) are safe and comfortable. Think twice before renting a car, and never drive at night outside cities.
Solo and women travellers
Women travelling alone can expect comments and attention, which are common but usually not threatening. Dress more conservatively in towns than on the beach, use Uber at night, and be cautious with friendly strangers offering drinks or rides. Staying in well-reviewed guesthouses in busy areas helps.
Health, water and heat
Do not drink tap water; use bottled or filtered water. Dengue is present, so use repellent, especially in the rainy season. The sun is strong all year (around 27-30°C), and hospitals in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana are good, but private care is expensive without insurance.
