Is Delphi safe? An honest guide for visitors
Short answer
Delphi is very safe, with almost no crime. The realistic risks are the steep, polished stones of the site, summer heat on the upper terraces and winding mountain roads, especially towards Arachova in snow.
The real risks
Slippery ancient paths
The Sacred Way and the climb to the stadium are steep and polished; wear shoes with grip.
Heat on the site
July and August reach about 31–32°C, with little shade; start at opening time and carry water.
Mountain roads
The roads to Arachova and Parnassos are winding and can have snow and ice in winter; carry chains if required.
Coach crowds
Tour groups arrive around 10:00–11:00; go early or late for a calmer visit.
Hiking
The E4 path and the Corycian Cave walk are rough; carry water and tell someone your route.
Wildfire risk
On hot, windy days, follow fire warnings in the olive groves and forests.
Areas and times to take care
There are no areas to avoid. The village is quiet at night, and the road between the site and the Castalian Spring has traffic, so walk on the side and carry a light after dark.
Getting around safely
KTEL buses are safe and reliable but infrequent. Taxis are few, so book in advance for Arachova or Hosios Loukas. Drive carefully on mountain roads, especially in winter.
Solo and women travellers
Delphi is a comfortable place for solo women, with a small, friendly village and very low crime. The main practical issue is limited transport in the evening; plan return trips from Arachova or Galaxidi in advance.
Health, water and heat
Tap water in the area is generally safe, though many visitors drink bottled water. Heat and sun on the site are the main summer risks; winters bring cold and snow higher up. The nearest hospital is in Amfissa; travel insurance is recommended.
