Is Cologne safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Cologne is a safe city for visitors, with low violent crime. The realistic risks are pickpocketing around the main station, the cathedral square and crowded events such as Carnival and the Christmas markets, and alcohol-fuelled rowdiness late at night. Day-to-day sightseeing is not a concern.

The real risks

Pickpocketing

Most common at Köln Hauptbahnhof, on the Domplatte, at the Christmas markets and in Carnival crowds. Keep bags zipped and in front.

Carnival crowds

During the street carnival (from Weiberfastnacht to Rose Monday), the old town is packed and drinking heavy. Go with friends, agree a meeting point and watch your belongings.

Cyclists and trams

Look out for bike lanes and trams, which are quiet and fast.

Begging and petitions

People with clipboards or asking for donations near the cathedral; politely walk on.

Areas and times to take care

The cathedral area, the Altstadt, the Belgian Quarter and Ehrenfeld are lively and generally safe. The area around the main station and the Ebertplatz square has a known issue with drug use and occasional trouble at night; pass through rather than linger late. Normal city care applies after midnight in nightlife areas such as the Ringe.

Getting around safely

KVB trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn are safe and run late, with some night services at weekends. Taxis are metered and reliable; ride-hailing apps also operate. From Cologne Bonn Airport the S-Bahn is the easiest option, about 15 minutes to the main station.

Solo and women travellers

Cologne is generally easy and safe for solo women. Take extra care during Carnival and other big street events, when crowds and drinking can lead to harassment; stay with others and use taxis late at night. Away from those dates, the centre and the Belgian Quarter are relaxed in the evening.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink. Healthcare is excellent; EU visitors should bring an EHIC/GHIC, and others travel insurance. Summers can occasionally top 30°C, and winters are grey and mild, around 3-7°C.

Emergency: 112 for fire and ambulance, 110 for police.
