Is Chania safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Chania is very safe, with low crime and a friendly old town that is lively until late. The realistic risks are road accidents, heat and long distances on the Samaria hike, and rough sea at exposed beaches such as Seitan Limania on windy days.

The real risks

Driving

Cretan roads can be fast and narrow, with drivers using the hard shoulder; drive defensively and avoid driving after drinking.

Samaria Gorge

About 16 km on stony ground; wear proper shoes, start early and carry at least 1.5 litres of water. The gorge closes on days of heavy rain or extreme heat.

Seitan Limania and rocky coves

The path is steep and slippery and entry is dangerous in waves; skip it on windy days.

Heat and sun at Balos

Little shade; bring an umbrella, water and sun protection.

Petty theft

Rare; keep an eye on bags on busy beaches and at the harbour.

Areas and times to take care

There are no areas to avoid. The Venetian harbour and old town are busy until late in summer and feel safe; the main concern is crowding, not crime.

Getting around safely

KTEL buses are safe and cheap. Taxis are metered or have fixed fares from the airport; agree the fare for long trips. Do not drive into the old town; park in the municipal car parks outside the walls.

Solo and women travellers

Chania is comfortable for women travelling alone, with a busy, well-lit old town and plenty of other visitors. Usual precautions apply in bars at night and on remote hikes, where it is best to tell someone your route.

Health, water and heat

Many visitors drink bottled water; ask your host about the local supply. Sun, heat and dehydration are the main health issues in summer, especially on gorge hikes. Chania has a general hospital.

Emergency: 112 (general emergency); 100 police, 166 ambulance.
