Is Chania expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Chania is mid-priced for Greece: cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos, a little more expensive than smaller Cretan towns, with the harbour front charging for the view. A budget day is about €80 per person, mid-range about €160 and comfort about €340; rooms in the old town, car rental and the big day trips are where the money goes.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the largest cost, especially inside the Venetian walls in July and August. The two classic day trips, the Samaria Gorge and the Balos boat, cost about €40–50 each with transport. A rental car adds €35–60 a day in summer. Food is good value away from the harbour front, and tavernas usually bring free dessert and raki. Greece also charges a per-room, per-night climate resilience fee, higher from April to October.
When it is cheaper
May, June and October are cheaper than July and August for rooms and cars; in winter many beach hotels close, but the town stays open with low room prices.
How to spend less
- Eat two streets back from the harbour, in Splantzia or around Daliani Street, where prices are lower.
- Use KTEL buses for Samaria, Kissamos and the western beaches instead of renting a car for the whole stay.
- Stay in Nea Chora or near the Agora, 10 minutes' walk from the harbour, for cheaper rooms.
- Take the airport bus (about €2.50) rather than a taxi (about €30).
- Swim at the town beach of Nea Chora instead of paying for sunbeds.
- Rent a car only for the days you go to Akrotiri, Falasarna or Elafonisi.
