Is Canada safe? An honest guide for visitors

Short answer

Canada is a very safe country for visitors, with low violent crime and well-run cities. The realistic risks are car break-ins, occasional petty theft in big-city centres, winter driving and wildlife and weather in the national parks.

The real risks

Car break-ins

Thefts from parked cars happen at trailheads and in city car parks. Leave nothing visible in the car.

Wildlife

Bears, elk and moose live in the Rockies. Carry bear spray on trails, make noise and keep at least 100 metres from bears.

Winter driving

Snow and ice from November to April make roads hazardous, especially mountain highways. Use winter tyres and check road reports.

Remote areas

The Icefields Parkway has no mobile signal and only one fuel stop. Fill up and carry water and warm layers.

Petty theft

Watch bags in busy downtown areas and on public transport, as in any large city.

Areas and times to take care

Downtown Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City are lively and comfortable to walk day and evening. As in any big city, a few downtown blocks can feel rough late at night, for example parts of the Downtown Eastside in Vancouver or some streets around Dundas and Sherbourne in Toronto; use common sense and stay where it is busy.

Getting around safely

Public transport in Toronto and Montreal is safe and runs late; Uber and Lyft operate in most cities. Licensed taxis are metered. Long-distance VIA Rail trains are safe and comfortable. Plan night travel in the national parks carefully because there is little transport after dark.

Solo and women travellers

Canada is one of the easiest countries for solo women. Normal city precautions apply: use rideshare or taxis late at night, keep drinks in sight in bars, and on trails let someone know your route and carry bear spray.

Health, water and heat

Tap water is safe to drink everywhere in towns and cities. In summer, wildfire smoke can affect air quality in the west; check air-quality reports. Ticks occur in some eastern woodlands. Healthcare is excellent but very expensive for visitors, so travel insurance is essential.
