Is Canada expensive? What things really cost in 2026
Short answer
Yes, Canada is fairly expensive, roughly on a par with the USA and above much of Europe once taxes and tips are added. A budget day is about C$200 per person, mid-range about C$370 and comfort about C$710. Hotels in Banff and big-city centres in summer, the flight west and car hire take most of the money.

Where the money goes
Accommodation is the main cost, especially in Banff, where doubles often cost C$280-450 in summer, and in central Toronto and Montreal. Transport is the second: the flight from the east to Calgary, VIA Rail tickets and a rental car for the Rockies add up. Prices are shown before sales tax (about 13-15% in Ontario and Quebec, 5% GST in Alberta) and restaurant tips of 15-20%, so the final bill is noticeably higher than the menu price.
When it is cheaper
Outside July and August, and away from ski season, hotel prices fall considerably, often by a third or more in Banff in late spring and late autumn. Late September and early October bring autumn colours in the east with lower rates than summer.
How to spend less
- Stay in Canmore instead of Banff; it is 25 minutes away and much cheaper.
- Buy a Parks Canada Discovery Pass if you spend a week in the national parks.
- Book VIA Rail between Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City early for the lowest fares.
- Bring your own wine to the many BYOB restaurants in Montreal's Plateau.
- Use the free Niagara Parkway walk rather than paid Clifton Hill attractions.
- Remember tax and tip when budgeting; add about 30% to menu prices in restaurants.

How much does a day in Canada cost?
About C$200 per person on a budget, C$370 mid-range and C$710 for comfort, before sales tax and tips.
Are prices in Canada shown with tax?
Usually not. Sales tax of about 5-15% depending on the province is added at the till, plus 15-20% tips in restaurants.
Why is Banff so expensive?
Demand is high and space inside the national park is limited, so summer rooms often cost C$280-450. Staying in Canmore is much cheaper.
